First Listen: Music From Baz Luhrmann's Film 'The... →
The soundtrack to The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann’s latest high-end refurbishing of a lived-in classic, doesn’t try to re-imagine Jazz Age tunes in a modern context. Instead, it attempts to transplant the sensibility of the 1920s to the hip-hop era, with genre-busting collaborations overseen by Jay-Z. I haven’t even read The Great Gatsby, which I think makes me the worst...

Microwave French Toast in a Mug
Remember when I shared my recipe for easy microwave miso soup? Well this recipe for microwave french toast is almost as easy, and just as fast. Not as healthy, but probably more delicious. It’s a give and take, you know? Bonus: It’s better than the french toast I make on the stove. No, seriously. The coating gets distributed perfectly. Ingredients: a few slices of bread (I used 3...

Lot's Wife by Gary J. Whitehead
Sometime soon after the embers cooled,  after dust clouds settled, after the last strings  of smoke, hoisted by desert breezes, cleared the air, they must have come, people of those three cities  remaining, to pick among the charred bones,  the rubble of what was once temple and house, stable and brothel; to kick at stones; to tug  at handles of buckets, blades of shovels and spades.  Later,...

Praise Song to Stone: For My Father by Qwo-Li...
Praise sternum cracked like mica after truck’s impact   Praise teeth in lower jaw sheared clean as marble rushing down his throat   Praise ghosts watching from behind granite graves across the street at the Rosebud Cemetery   Praise body arched like sandstone illuminated by headlights as it flashes through air before landing on the other side   Praise dust that surges as he hits...

The Easiest, Fastest Healthy Recipe Ever:...
This is so simple, but I am writing it down in case I am ever foolish enough to forget it exists: 1. Dump whatever amount of frozen veggies you want to eat into a microwave-safe soup bowl. I used broccoli and green beans. 2. Add enough water to the bowl to cover about 1/2 to 2/3 of the veggies. Cover, and microwave for 2-3 min. 3. Add more hot water to the bowl (I heated mine in an electric...

Alabanza: In Praise of Local 100 by Martin Espad
for the 43 members of Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Local 100, working at the Windows on the World restaurant, who lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center Alabanza. Praise the cook with the shaven head and a tattoo on his shoulder that said Oye, a blue-eyed Puerto Rican with people from Fajardo, the harbor of pirates centuries ago. Praise the lighthouse in Fajardo,...

Four Poems for Robin by Gary Snyder
Siwashing It Out Once in Suislaw Forest I slept under rhododendron All night blossoms fell Shivering on a sheet of cardboard Feet stuck in my pack Hands deep in my pockets Barely able to sleep. I remembered when we were in school Sleeping together in a big warm bed We were the youngest lovers When we broke up we were still nineteen Now our friends are married You...

Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy
Not a red rose or a satin heart. I give you an onion. It is a moon wrapped in brown paper. It promises light like the careful undressing of love. Here.  It will blind you with tears  like a lover. It will make your reflection a wobbling photo of grief. I am trying to be truthful. Not a cute card or a kissogram. I give you an onion. Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithful as...

I know this series of sketches isn’t exactly timely at this point, but I fucking love it. Hilarious. I think Allison Williams is better here than on Girls (and I really like Girls).
